AN Irish phrase from my school days, “Bhi an fearann ag titim go trom mar a bheadh uisce trí criothair”* drip-fed my mind as I drove towards Mountbellew in torrential rain on the morning of August 1.

I wondered how I could stop people in the town to ask them about what was going on. But luck was on my side when I spotted a sign for a coffee shop and garden centre just as I was entering Mountbellew. It was the Capolatte Café and proprietor Yvonne Miland and manager Veronica Ryan were most welcoming and allowed me use their comfortable sofa and table as my “office” for the next few hours.
Fifteen years ago the Miland family were on holidays abroad. Daughter Aisling was seven at the time and as her parents sat drinking a cappuccino and a latte, she had an inspiration and suggested they should start a coffee shop in Mountbellew.
