Santa to bring snow to Tuam for big Christmas light switch on
SLEIGH bells will ring in Tuam this weekend as the town kick-starts its festive shopping season when Santa will switch on the Christmas lights. Organised by Tuam Chamber of Commerce, the evening is the third in a series of free, family fun events designed to encourage people to highlight all that Tuam has to offer as a shopping destination. Santa is due to arrive in the Square on Saturday December 1, aboard his special sleigh, at 6.30 pm and he will bring lots of treats for all those children who have been good this year.[private] The fun will begin earlier in the evening when local DJ Shane Donnellan aims to get everyone in the party mood and a display by local youth theatre group, StageLeft, will also entertain the crowds from 5 pm. Last year's event saw the Square packed to capacity as people of all ages enjoyed Christmas music and the magic of a snow machine which created a wonderful festive feel in the town. This year, the snow machine is back by popular demand, and people are urged to wrap up well as the forecast is for dry but cold weather. Members of Tuam Town Council and Tuam Hurling Club will be on hand to help Santa make his way to the stage for the official lighting-up of the town at 7 pm. 'There has never been a better time to shop in Tuam,' said Chamber of Commerce President Ronan Glynn. Best display 'We can boast one of the best Christmas light displays in the county, smooth road surfaces, ample car parking, a diverse variety of shops and a friendly, personal service that offers great quality and value to the shopper. 'A number of our members are taking part in Fiver Friday this Friday, November 30, with great offers and discounts available so it's the perfect way to start your Christmas shopping. 'We are looking forward to another great day for Tuam as young and old gather to see Tuam shine.' Other events planned throughout December by the Chamber include a Christmas market and a Christmas Movie event at the Mall Theatre. The town has also been designated a carol-friendly zone for the festive season and any group interested in performing is asked to contact the Chamber on 093-42220. Traffic restrictions will be in place at the Square from 6 pm on Saturday evening so people are advised to make their way into the town centre early to get the best vantage point for a wonderful evening's entertainment.[/private]
