Tostal is back after 50 years

ANYONE who can remember the last An Tóstal festival in Salthill is now drawing the pension, but the event is back this May Bank Holiday weekend. The original festival took place all over the country to celebrate Irish life and traditions, and to attract visitors. It gradually declined, except in Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim, where it is still held. The new version opens in Salthill on Saturday and is billed as a festival to kick-start the holiday season, showcasing the best in Irish coastal traditions and culture. This is a Fáilte Ireland supported festival, and the 2011 An Tóstal â€â€ which translates as â€Ëœgathering' or â€Ëœcelebration' â€â€ will once again celebrate the local traditions, customs, language and music of Ireland, with an emphasis on the Gaeltacht, on the shores of Galway Bay. The main event will be the Currach racing, which will take place parallel to the promenade on both days of the event.   Galway Hookers will also race in the Bay throughout the weekend. The winning Currach team from An Tóstal 1955 will officiate at the opening ceremony at 12 noon at the Galway Bay Hotel.
