Monivea kids raise the roof with Trad for Trocaire

A GROUP of budding trad musicians from Monivea will bring their talent to the masses this weekend when they aim to raise money as part of Trad for Trócaire. [private] The group of seven children will take up a spot outside Joyce's 365 supermarket at the Athenry Shopping Centre at 4 pm on Saturday for an afternoon of live entertainment in aid of the charity. Catering to a range of musical tastes, the group includes a pop duo, Niamh Coughlan and Cian Harris, who will bring a modern twist to the group's performance with their version of popular hits such as Coldplay's Yellow, Stevie Wonder's Very Superstitious and the Beatles classic Let it Be. The Trad for Trócaire event is a double billing with adult musicians taking part in a session at Kelly's Pub in  on Saturday night at 9 pm. Abbie Harris, fiddle player and mother of Cian, says the community regularly enjoys impromptu trad sessions and wanted to do something to raise money for charity. Speaking from the Little Bakehouse in Monivea, where the group met up for a final practice session earlier this week, Abbie said there was a lot of excitement. 'The children have been playing together for the past three years or so, so this will be their first public performance and we're all looking forward to it,' she said. 'The adults have been playing on a monthly basis for many years and we're expecting a crowd of about 30 musicians on Saturday night, including members of the Dusty Banjos who play in Galway every week.  It will be a great night of music so we're hoping people will come along to support.' [/private]
