Heritage sector can generate jobs

OUR growing heritage sector can generate jobs and development, and this Saturday, March 3, heritage practitioners, local business people, and entrepreneurs will attend a workshop in NUI Galway to discuss the potential for the Irish heritage sector to aid local revitalisation and encourage economic growth. [private] This free workshop, which is part of a series of workshops being run by the Heritage Council, aims to build an awareness of employment opportunities within the heritage sector. It will showcase some of the many Galway-based people in the sector. NUI Galway lecturer Conor Newman, Heritage Council Chairman, said 'This workshop series has been developed on the back of the Heritage Council's â€ËœPlace as Resource' conference held in October 2011. The Conference tackled the issues surrounding the heritage sector's reinvigoration and continued development, as well as the important role it plays within the Irish economy. The â€ËœHeritage as an Engine' workshops are the next step in building awareness of the significant impact the sector can have on towns and villages nationwide.' Speakers will include Martina Moloney, Galway County Manager, Tracey Burrows, Slieve Aughty Equestrian Centre, Mary Corcoran, Turoe Pet Farm Enterprise. There will also be representatives from agencies including Galway Rural Development, FORUM Connemara Ltd, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Citizens Information, Fáilte Ireland, and the Employment Services in the Department of Social Protection to give advice on anyone thinking of starting a new enterprise. The Galway Heritage Workshop will be held on from 9.30 to 2 pm in the Aula Maxima, NUIG. Attendance is free but booking is required.
