What will they call the new road?

O'TOOLE Boulevard and Super Valu Road were two of the suggestions put forth at this month's meeting of Tuam Town Council as a name for the town's newest road which is due to open in just over a fortnight. Final surfacing work has commenced on the Bishop Street end of the Inner Relief Road, with council officials confirming it will be open to traffic by Saturday, Dec 19. [private] Temporary traffic arrangements have been agreed for the road, which will be two-way, despite a final Traffic Management Plan for Tuam not likely to be implemented until well into the New Year. Traffic approaching from Bishop Street will be directed left at the junction with Shop Street, despite officials indicating last month that Foster Place would be made two-way to allow traffic exit the town centre via the Ballygaddy Road. Co Council will decide Town Manager Frank Gilmore confirmed a new name for the road will be a matter for the members of Galway Co Council to decide, but said no consideration had been given to the issue at this stage. 'As soon as the road is ready we will open it to traffic and temporary traffic arrangements will be introduced to facilitate this,' he said. Members of the Town Council had hoped to be given outline maps of the new link road at this month's meeting, where Cllr Pat O'Hora questioned Mr Gilmore on the need to provide a public forum for those affected by the new infrastructure. However, Mr Gilmore said there was no need to facilitate a public forum on the new road as all issues had been taken into account during the planning phase. 'It would be very unusual to hold a public forum before the road opens and I don't think this is necessary in this case,' he said. 'A public consultation process was part of the planning stages of this development and any issues that arose were thrashed out at that time.' [/private]
