Victim left unconscious and in pool of blood after Tuam street attack
AN assault victim was left unconscious and in a pool of blood on a Tuam street after being attacked by members of a local gang. Two assailants were captured on CCTV and one received an 18-month prison sentence when he appeared before the local District Court. [private] Cody Boyle, 127 Parkmore, Tuam, was a member of the gang which attacked the man. The victim was walking home from the centre of town at 2.35 am when he came across youths crouching behind a car. Eric Gleeson solr (defending) said his client had a long history of getting into trouble. He was the elder of two brothers who were known to the Court but the younger brother now appeared to have cleaned up his act. Eric Gleeson said that his client admitted taking part in the attack but insisted he only punched the victim and did not take part in kicking him while he lay on the ground. He acknowledged that this was a brutal, violent and uncalled for attack on a person who was walking home. He asked if they were OK and they attacked him. The victim was left unconscious and in a pool of blood. An ambulance was called and he was taken to A&E for treatment. He is left with marks to his head as a result of the attack. Judge Browne said Boyle seemed to have some attitude problems, which would have to be dealt with somewhere else. Imposing an 11-month prison sentence for assault the Judge said: 'Wasn't he very brave, assaulting a person coming down the street. If I could give him more, I would.' The Court was told Boyle, who has 13 previous convictions and has served prison terms, would not co-operate with the Probation Services and felt the system was out to get him. Boyle was sentenced to a further five months for an assault at a Tuam school debs in Ballinasloe and two months on a public order charge, bringing the total time to be served up to 18 months. [/private]
