Clonbur were extra-time winners over Glen'

By BILLY COSS Naomh Pádraig, An Fhairche .0-10 Glenamaddy-Glinsk .1-6   A LITTLE over three months on from their historic All-Ireland Junior Club final success, the footballers of Clonbur opened the Galway Intermediate Championship with a slender extra-time win over Glenamaddy-Glinsk on Saturday afternoon. Steven Joyce's team got there in the end but almost paid a high price for their woeful shooting (17 wides in total) against a Glenamaddy-Glinsk side that were left feeling aggrieved at referee Tony Keating's decision not to award a penalty in their favour in the final minutes of normal time.[private] This tie, the first of the Tuam Stadium triple-bill prior to the Killererin v Caherlistrane and Corofin v Tuam Stars senior matches, was far from a classic. Mickey Byrne's side, operating on limited possession, but were economical with their chances in the opening half and Michael Fox's sixth minute goal set them on their way to a 1-2 to 0-0 lead. Clonbur's inability to break down their opponents' mass defence and their failure to get to grips with the swirling wind, especially when shooting into the town goal, meant they went scoreless for the first 27 minutes. When Eoin Joyce finally opened their account, it started a run of five unanswered points either side of half-time that brought Clonbur level. Pat Lambe was one their few forwards exempt from the wastefulness and his scoring return, all coming at important stages, was to prove central to their win. Midfielder Shane Mannion and the promising Cormac Raftery led Glenamaddy-Glinsk's second-half challenge and twice Tomás Curtin put them ahead, only for Clonbur to cancel those scores through Joyce and Liam Carney as the sides finished all square after an hour. Following a scoreless first half of extra-time, Glenamaddy-Glinsk edged in front early in the second but their chances received a hammer blow when Mannion, who was superb at midfield, was dismissed after picking a second yellow card. Soon after, Clonbur found their range to secure their place in second round â€â€ and consign Glenamaddy-Glinsk to the qualifiers â€â€ with late points from Joyce, Lambe and Damien Ó Muirín.
