Tuam Gardai open book of condolence

A BOOK of condolence has been opened at Tuam Garda Station in memory of Garda Detective Adrian Donohoe who was killed in County Louth last Friday. A state funeral for the father of two takes place today (Wednesday) at St Joseph's Redemptorist Church in Dundalk. Garda Donohoe died during an armed raid at a credit union in Bellurgan, Jenkinstown in Co Louth on Friday night. The book in Tuam is one of many that have been opened at Garda stations throughout the county as the investigation into his killing continues. Gardai in Tuam say the book will remain open until the end of the week. Meanwhile, tributes were paid to Detective Garda Donohoe at a meeting of Galway Co Council at County Hall on Monday. The tributes were led by Mayor of Galway Tomas Welby and County Manager Martina Maloney who said it was a sad day for Ireland when a public servant could be gunned down in such a manner. She offered her condolences to the Donohoe family and his colleagues in An Garda Síochána. Cllr Jim Cuddy, a former Garda, said he had thought the death of Jerry McCabe in Limerick 17 years ago would be the last of such outrages but this was sadly not the case. He described the murder as an attack on all of society. Cllr Jimmy McClearn said we are all very fortunate to have people who put their lives at risk day after day to protect society and this should never be forgotten. 'This was a man cut down in his prime, doing his duty for this State and it is fitting that the council should pay their respects in this way,' he said. Tributes were also paid to the work of the Gardai, often in very difficult circumstances, and members asked that a unanimous expression of the council's condolence to be extended both to the Donohoe family and the Garda Commissioner. Books of condolence have also been opened at City Hall in Galway and at Galway Garda Station, Millstreet.
