They’ll bark in the Park in aid of Tuam Mental Health

By SIOBHÃÂN HOLLIMAN BARK in the Park, a sponsored dog walk in aid of Tuam and District Mental Health Association, will take place this Sunday, June 9. The event in the Palace Grounds aims to provide a fun family day for all dog lovers and will include treats for all participating dogs. It also aims to highlight the problem of dog litter on the streets of Tuam and to encourage responsible dog ownership. Organisers believe there is a need for more awareness about the responsibility of dog owners to clean up after their dog and to educate people about disposing of their dogâ€â„¢s litter.[private] Recent meetings have highlighted the problem of dog litter and group members reported dog litter in nine locations on one road in the town centre recently. Complaints have also been made about dog owners not cleaning up after their dogs in Tuam and in other popular walking areas such as Knockma. It is has been suggested that special â€Å“poop binsâ€Â be located close to public amenity areas in the town. Sundayâ€â„¢s Fun Day will highlight the benefits of dog ownership. Dogs not only provide companionship; research suggests that having a dog in our life can bring overall health improvements, reducing blood pressure and bringing opportunities for exercise. Having a dog can also be a social outlet; a way of meeting others in the community while out for a walk. Dogs can also help with the problems arising from isolation, especially, for those who are mostly confined to their home. The event will feature a dog-grooming exhibition, an information stand by a dog rescue shelter and according to the forecast, plenty of warm sunshine. Sponsorship forms are available from the Tuam and District Mental Health Association information office on Bishop Street or by contacting 087-4111129 or 087-7055868. [/private]
