More security to stop car break-ins at Knockma

By TOM GILMORE MORE security measures are to be put in place to catch the culprits and prevent further break-ins after a spate of smash-and-grab attacks in recent days on cars parked at the scenic walking route at Knockma Hill, Castlehackett. Items including mobile phones and handbags were stolen in the latest spate of break-ins to vehicles at the car park leading to the scenic walk. Five vehicles were targeted between 3 and 4 pm last Thursday and a further car had its side window smashed and items taken last Sunday shortly after 5 pm. A source at the National Parks and Wildife section of the Department of the Environment says patrols will be increased in this area. Additional signs will be erected warning motorists not to leave valuables visible in vehicles, and the possibility of installing security cameras at the site will also be considered, even on a temporary or intermittent basis.[private] Meanwhile Tuam Gardai say their investigations are continuing into the latest spate of break-ins and they are asking for the help of the public in their efforts to apprehend those responsible. The Gardai say people should never leave any valuables visible in vehicles and motorists should not be seen putting items in the boot of their cars either. Tuam Gardai say if people have valuables in their cars it is best to have them concealed in the boot before arriving at their destination, but not after parking, because thieves may be watching out for that. Apart from not leaving valuables such as phones, handbags or laptops visible in cars the Gardai also say that coats or other items should not be left on car seats as they also attract the thieves who may think that wallets or other items may be in pockets. While increased surveillance around the parking area at Knockma Hill may lead to the apprehending of those carrying out the break-ins the Gardai say that vigilance by members of the public can help them in their investigations. Anyone who sees anything unusual can contact Tuam Garda Station at 093 70840. Meanwhile not far from the scene of the break-ins to cars near Knockma damage was also caused recently to some headstones at the old graveyard close to Canavanâ€â„¢s Bar in Belclare. Members of the community council say it is shameful for anyone to carry out such acts of vandalism. The community council also say there has been a noticeable increase in illegal dumping in the Belclare area recently. This has been reported to the wardens and is being investigated. If anyone notices illegal dumping they should contact the litter warden at 093 24123. [/private]
