Father of six jailed for stealing child's trike

A FATHER of six has been jailed for two months for stealing a child's tricycle from a toy store in Galway city. PJ Doherty (28), of 8 Ballinamona Park, Tuam, who has 50 convictions, mostly for thefts, appeared in custody before Galway District Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to stealing the €112 pink Smart tricycle from Smyth's toy store at Galway Retail Park on September 6 last year. [private] Inspector Sean Glynn said Doherty parked his car outside the toy store at 12.30pm, walked in, picked up the tricycle, walked out, put in the back of his car and drove off. Gardai recognised him Gardai immediately recognised Doherty when they later viewed the store's CCTV. They later charged Doherty.  He returned to Smyth's a few days later and offered to pay for the tricycle but staff refused to take his money. Defence solicitor Sean Acton said his client is a chronic heroin addict and the father of six children. Doherty, the court was told, is currently serving a 18-month sentence for trespass and burglary. Judge Mary Fahy sentenced Doherty to two months in prison for this latest offence.
