Tran year diary – Singing, public speaking, first aid, fashion — it's all go for Pres TYs

AS another week goes by in Transition Year, it's as busy as ever. Firstly, on behalf of the TY class I would like to thank everyone who came and supported our choir in the Our Schools Got Talent competition final last Saturday in the Radisson Hotel in Galway City. Unfortunately, we did not get through to the final, but we still had a great night. We would like to show appreciation to our music teacher Ms McGinty and Ms Brennan, who helped us with the competition; we would have been lost without them both. Also congratulations to Heather Doyle in fifth year who got through to the Connacht finals. There was a great buzz in the school last week when the school production of Annie Get Your Gun was going on. The musical was a great success and well done to everyone involved. The show was brilliantly produced and all in all a great production. We started this week off by going to support our school in a debate about mental health. One of our classmates, Olivia Collins, joined two fifth-year students in representing our school against St Jarlath's College, and Glenamaddy. Well done to the girls as they won and are now through to the next round of the debating competition. On Tuesday we started a two-day First Aid course. The course was a great experience and taught us many life skills, from putting bandages on properly to knowing how to help people to the best of our ability in the case of a serious accident. It also showed us definitely what not to do! We had an exam on Friday to put our knowledge of what we learned on Tuesday to the test. It went well. We would like to express our thanks to Ms Jacobson who organised the course for us, and express our gratitude to Louie from Galway Civil Defence who came in and taught the course. We really appreciate the time and effort she put in over the two-day period. Cathriona King came into us on Wednesday to help us with our outfits for the fashion show. Cathriona was a great inspiration to us. With her help, I think it is safe to say our outfits are 'definitely fabulous' â€â€ we cannot wait to show them to everybody in the fashion show! Another big thanks to Cathriona for helping us. Previously, in September, Cathriona also helped us with our hat making and, honestly, without her help our hats or outfits would be nowhere near as fantastic as they are now. After all our hard work planting the daffodils for Tuam Cancer Care we raised €208. The daffodil planting was a great success and thanks to everyone who supported us. It was a great two days of planting and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Hopefully, we will be doing plenty more projects like it. On Monday, 28th of November we will attend the Bin It! workshop. The Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) is part of a campaign that aims to achieve a long-term sustainable solution to the irresponsible disposal of chewing gum. This workshop is to encourage more people not to litter and to keep everywhere clean and respectable. We hope everyone will cooperate, as it is a great campaign for the whole school community to get involved in! Next week is sure to be as busy as always. We have a drumming workshop and the girls and I simply cannot wait, as we know it will be great craic! We are also looking forward to our creative writing class, as we are sure it will be a great experience. Also as part of our Gaisce award, many TY students are volunteering with a homework club in the school. Of course our lessons and homework are continuing and our project deadlines are approaching, so we have to make time for them all in the midst of this chaos, and knuckle down and put time into the academic side of things as well! â€â€ Alana Folan
