Councillors unhappy with one-off housing plan

UNDER Galway County Council’s draft County Development Plan for 2022-28, the local authority plans to grant planning permission to just 911 “one-off” houses in rural areas during that timeframe.

Divided up among the six Municipal Districts, this will work out, on average, at just under 19 units per year built on greenfield sites (sites that have not been previously built upon) in each Local Electoral Area, outside 22 selected towns and villages.

This figure sparked a heated debate among councillors and Galway Co Co’s executives at a recent meeting and it began with the elected members putting forward a motion – which was proposed by Cllr Joe Byrne and jointly seconded by Cllr Mary Hoade and Cllr Thomas Welby – that requested the 911 cap be removed and no figure be put on the plan.
