Glinsk to celebrate its 100th birthday
NEXT month the village of Glinsk will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the movement of a large number of families to the area back in 1912. The celebrations are planned for Glinsk from August 24 to 26. Over 110 families moved into the area in the years from 1910 to 1920, while other families moved out of the area, mainly to areas such as Donamon, Leamore, Castleruby and Castleplunkett. While the move took a decade to complete, the years of 1911 and 1912 were the high points in terms of activity and it was decided to commemorate this mass movement in the area with a special weekend of celebrations. Next month the community in Glinsk will celebrate the centenary of this move with a re-enactment followed by a special commemorative Mass in St. Michael's Church. On Saturday, a conference will examine all aspects of the events of 1912 from a historical perspective. A night of music with Matt Keane and his family and members of the Naughton family takes place on Saturday night, with the launch of a book to mark the occasion. A traditional craft display on Sunday afternoon will be followed by a 1912-style football game between the two sides of the parish, Glinsk and Creggs, on Sunday evening.
