You can take Tom out of TUAM, but you can't take Tuam out of TOM
BY DAVID BURKE THE striking image of a man leaning on the rail of an emigrant ship adorns the poster for DruidMurphy, as well as the programme and the published scripts. It is the work of David Rooney, an artist with an instantly recognisable scraperboard technique whose work is seen regularly in publications like Hot Press and The Irish Times. David has a Tuam background: his mother is Doreen Monahan, and his uncle Tommy still runs the motor factors on High Street which before that was the family confectionery business. His recent work includes a series of illustrations for the BBC series The Story of Ireland, panels for the Titanic Museum in Belfast and the recent Bram Stoker commemorative postage stamp.
