Tuam woman appointed a Circuit Court judge

A TUAM woman, Carmel Stewart SC, has been nominated by the government, for appointment by the President as a Circuit Court Judge. She is member of, and a former chairperson of, the Family Lawyers Association. She is a board member and a former Director of the Free Legal Advice Centres (Flac). She was a member of the Mountjoy  Visiting Committee from 1996 until 1999, vice-chairperson of the Employment Appeals Tribunal from 1993 until 1997 and was a former board member of the National College of Art & Design (NCAD). She recently was successful in representing three women, who travelled abroad for abortions, at the European Court of Human Rights (ABC case). Born in 1957 to Mick and Carmel Stewart of Dublin Road, she comes from a well known Tuam family. She is married to  Noel Grehan, from High Street. She was educated at the Presentation Convent in Tuam, UCG (now NUIG) and the King's Inns. She was called to the Bar in 1987 and became a Senior Counsel in 2008. Her practice included family law, mental health and wardship law. Judge Stewart has been assigned to the Dublin Circuit Court permanently.
