Maths challenge for Co Galway's Junior Certs

STUDENTS from the NUIG BA in Mathematics and Education programme will this week host their Challenge Maths competition for Junior Certificate students from secondary schools throughout Co Galway. The initiative has been designed by the college's third-year maths students to promote the fun and challenge of mathematics and applied mathematics for Junior Cert students and will involve a full day of practical maths-based challenges that are closely modelled on the current Junior Cert maths and project maths curriculums. Teams of students from various secondary schools will compete to win the challenge and be crowned the NUI Galway Challenge Maths champions. [private] Daniel O'Connell, event organiser and a third-year BA in Mathematics and Education student said: 'My fellow students and I have put in a lot of work into planning the Challenge Maths event and we are confident that the secondary school students who attend will reap the benefits. This is a great opportunity for the participants to interact with mathematics in a fun and challenging environment, while at the same time representing their school. We would like to specifically mention the teachers of the participating schools, NUI Galway and our sponsors, without their help this event would not be possible.' The competition will take place in NUI Galway this Friday, March 23 from 9am to 3pm. [/private]
