Local teachers for EAL conference
LOCAL teachers are expected to attend the English Language Support Teachers' Association (ELSTA) fifth annual conference in Marino Institute of Education on Saturday October 15 from 9 to 5.30. [private] This year's theme Schools Embracing Diversity reflects the continuing concerns of teachers and people working with immigrant families. In a time of stringent educational cutbacks, it is more necessary than ever to protect and improve the conditions which migrant students face daily so that they can achieve their full potential and help to create a new and vibrant Ireland where human rights are a central plank. Once again, ELSTA has attracted globally respected key speakers. Prof Constant Leung of King's College London and Dr Merike Dermody of the ESRI will speak to the theme. They will be supported by workshops for primary and post-primary schools delivered by expert practitioners. A systematic exchange of EAL (English as an Additional Language) ideas and techniques between teachers, which is a highlight for many teachers who attend the annual conference, will be repeated this year. There will be stalls with resources and a hot lunch on the day. For more information see www.elsta.ie or email conference@elsta.ie [/private]
