Vandals attack Lackagh Cemetery
GRAVES have been desecrated and statues stolen in what locals have described as 'a vile act of vandalism' at Lackagh Cemetery. [private] At least eight graves were vandalised in the cemetery late on Thursday night or in the early hours of Friday morning. Following the incident a local councillor has called for more lighting at the entrance to the graveyard. Cllr Jarlath McDonagh says that solar panel lighting should be installed at the gate of the cemetery. He says the local community campaigned hard to have the cemetery extended a few years ago and thanks to the generosity of the Flynn Family additional burial ground was secured. 'It is absolutely shocking that people would vandalise graves. I hope that those responsible will be brought to justice,' says Cllr McDonagh. But until a formal complaint is made to the Gardai they cannot instigate any investigation into the incident. No formal complaint had been made to the Gardai at Mill Street Station up to Monday evening and a spokesperson there said they had received no complaint either at Loughgeorge Garda Station, which serves the Lackagh area. 'We have checked our computer system back to August 20 and no complaint has been logged for that period regarding the alleged incident in the Lackagh graveyard. 'Of course if a formal complaint is made we will investigate it,' said the Garda spokesperson. [/private]
