St Jarlath's All-Ireland winners for four nation event

TWO students from St Jarlath's College, Tuam, who were the winners of the All-Ireland Schools Debating Final held in University College Cork recently, will now represent Ireland in an international debating competition.[private] This is only the second time in its 34 year history that the All-Ireland title has been won by a school from the West of Ireland. The members of the St Jarlath's College team were Daithí Kilgarriff, Dunmore and Ross O'Ceallaigh, Tuam. They won the national title after a robust display of debating skills. The two Tuam students will now represent Ireland in the four nations English Speaking Union International Mace debating finals this Saturday, April 30 in the Royal College of Physicians, Dublin. The motion for the first debate against Wales will see the Jarlath's lads proposing the motion 'That this house would not allow parents to remove their children from sex education classes.' If they win that debate they will compete against the winners of England and Scotland and the motion will be 'This house would hold drug dealers liable for the drug-related crimes of their customers.' Daithí and Ross were convincing winners in the All- Ireland in their argument that the minimum wage should not be abolished. The seven-strong adjudicating panel were highly impressed by the performance of the duo and paid tribute to their skills and excellence. The All-Ireland competition began last October and involved over 700 competitors from all four provinces. Daithí and Ross and their coach Ms. Brighid Cannon were delighted to bring the Dillon Shield back to the West for the first time in over three decades. [/private]
