MANY tributes were paid from far and wide over the last week after one of Tuam's great characters and a man who contributed hugely to Galway football, Tommy Varden, passed away at the age of 79 following a short illness.

Fondly remembered as a loyal sponsor of the Galway teams that won All-Ireland senior football titles in 1998 and 2001, Tommy was a well-known businessman and built up a successful catering equipment company that started all the way back in 1973.
In more recent times, he became involved in Development Advocates for Tuam Stadium (DAFTS) as chairman as the drive to develop the ground ramped up with a number of successful fundraising events.
