Mountbellew-Moylough end long wait to claim U-21 success

MOUNTBELLEW-MOYLOUGH football has been on a steep upward trajectory in recent years and on Saturday evening at Tuam Stadium they added the County U-21 title to their growing list of underage silverware.
You have to go all the way back to 1970 to find the last time the club won the competition but with many of the current side still on board next year, it’ll take a serious effort to prise the Paddy Stephens Memorial Cup away from them.
Winning two North Boards and one County title at minor level was evidence of their promise and they’ve now progressed to tick another landmark win off their to-do list. Three years ago, they suffered a disappointing defeat to Claregalway in the North Board Minor A decider before returning to take the 2014 and 2015 titles, as well as winning and losing County finals against Salthill-Knocknacarra. They pieced together a decent formline over the past ten weeks at U-21 level, narrowly turning the tables on Claregalway before beating Headford and ending Corofin’s recent dominance of the grade.
