Championship fever

SOME 273 days after going head-to-head with eventual All-Ireland SFC champions Kerry, Galway will kick-start their Connacht Senior Football Championship campaign in a preliminary round meeting with New York at Gaelic Park on Sunday.
A win in the Bronx is the first step on what Galway supporters hope will be a four-game journey to a provincial title that last visited the county in 2008.
The camp fly out from Shannon Airport on Thursday and while most supporters will be congregating around the usual haunts and sampling what the Big Apple has to offer, the team and management will be based far away from the bright lights, focusing on the serious business ahead.
