Call to abandon plans for rail extension once and for all

THE ending of freight train services between Ballina, Co Mayo and Waterford Port is a clear signal to abandon plans to extend the Western Rail Corridor north of Athenry.

That’s the view of Galway East Fine Gael Deputy Ciaran Cannon who says the freight service to Waterford wasn’t viable and the case argued by the rail corridor campaigners to extend the Waterford service to the disused western rail track can no longer be made.
