Council write off €6 million in rates but still owed €6 million in arrears

GALWAY County Council are writing off almost €6 million of rates owed by business around the county.

This will be the third year in a row that the Council has written off similar sums for rates arrears.
However, the Council has less rates arrears now than they had in 2014 when it was €10 million — now down to €6.3 million.
Prior to next week’s Council budget meeting, information on rates collected in the past three years was circulated to members.
Independent Cllr James Charity said the arrears and the amounts written off by the Council in recent years were indicative of hard economic times for businesses, some of which had closed down.
