Cutback on free festive parking

THERE has been a significant cutback in the amount of free parking being offered to shoppers in county towns this Christmas season because of a cash-strapped County Council.

There will be no parking charges in public car parks on Saturdays next month and the week preceding Christmas will be free every day. However, last year there was three weeks of free parking from 11am in towns such as Tuam, Athenry, Ballinasloe, Gort and Loughrea.

The change is understood to be saving the local authority in the region of €20,000.
