No write off for rate payers

BUSINESSES with hefty rates arrears will not have their debts written off, officials from Galway Co Council have warned.

It’s understood that the amount overdue to the local authority in rates, covering a number of years, is a significant seven-figure sum.
Calls have been made by local representatives for the council to be more lenient when dealing with rates arrears but it appears there will be no wiping the slate clean for affected businesses.
Cathaoirleach of Tuam MDC Cllr Donagh Killilea made a call for leniency at a council meeting, where a draft budget for the electoral area was being considered.
