Cheers and terror for teen champ

Alex Fitzpatrick won gold.

A St Jarlath’s college student secured a Gold medal at an international kickboxing event in Italy only hours after experiencing a traumatic incident in the sporting venue.

Fifteen year old Alex Fitzpatrick of Cortoonrua, Tuam said he feared for his life after shots were fired in the arena in Carrara in Tuscany on Sunday.

Alex was one of 13 Irish competitors at the Unified World Championships in martial arts when gun shots were heard.

When another round of shots was fired, people panicked and a stampede ensued.
