Galway hoteliers face staffing shortage

A NUMBER of hotels in Galway are battling to get the best talent as the scarcity of skilled staff in the hospitality industry heightens.

While hotels in the region are reporting a very healthy summer season to date and plenty of jobs are available, it is proving difficult to attract school leavers to the sector.
A new apprenticeship initiative starting next month aims to increase the number of chefs, of which there is an accute shortage. Chairperson of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) in Galway Rory Fitzpatrick says secondary school students and school leavers should consider the variety of careers available within the sector from HR and accounting to marketing and administration.
Mr Fitzpatrick of the Clayton Hotel in Galway say this summer has been good for hotels in the city and county and that anecdotally colleagues are reporting a “bumper†season so far.
