Injured rugby player makes progress but recovery is tough

A BELCLARE woman left with catastrophic injuries after a freak sporting accident is making steady progress after treatment at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dublin.

Carmel Creaven, 24, was injured playing for Tuam Rugby Club last January when she collided with opposing players coming out of a maul during a game. She was diagnosed with central chord spinal shock syndrome and was unable to walk unaided.
She spent almost seven weeks in hospital in Galway after the accident and was referred to neurologists in the Mater Private hospital in Dublin before securing a bed in the NRH in Dun Laoghaire in July. She returned to Belclare earlier this month after six weeks of intensive treatment.
Speaking to The Tuam Herald this week, Carmel said she is making great progress but is still in a lot of pain.
