Serious stabbing incident at Tuam halting site

TUAM Gardaí are investigating a serious stabbing incident which occurred at Tuam Halting Site on the Galway Road on Saturday night.

The victim suffered severe injuries and was rushed to University Hospital Galway where his wounds needed 150 stitches. He remained in hospital for two days before discharging himself.
The victim is not a member of the Travelling community and told The Herald this was an unprovoked attack. He is recovering from his injury and the matter is expected to come before the courts in due course.
Gardaí are understood to have questioned a number of witnesses, as well as the main suspect, and statements have been made.
Because of the seriousness of the injuries sustained in the stabbing, it is unlikely any subsequent court hearing will be heard at Tuam District Court. Under normal circumstances such a serious case will be sent forward to the Circuit Criminal Court sitting in Galway.
