Speed limit changes may slow down major road funding

FEARS that thousands of euro in funding will be lost for road repair may force councillors to fight proposals to slow down traffic on one of the county's major routes.

Confusion has emerged as to whether plans to reduce the speed limit on most of the N63 – the Galway to Roscommon road – from 100 kmph to 80 kmph, will in fact put a stop to it being repaired by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), previously known as the NRA.
The bill would then fall to the Co Council which has already endured big cuts to its budget and can barely maintain the roads it is currently responsible for.
Irate councillors have called for a special meeting to discuss the proposals.
