At last Cahergal NS will have new school

WORK on Cahergal’s long awaited new school building began this week when the first sod was turned on the €1.8m project.
The six classroom school, being built to the rear of the existing school, is the culmination of an 18-year battle for new facilities in the area.
Past and present principals Carmel Niland and Sally Flynn performed the honours on site on Monday morning in the presence of a large crowd of pupils and their families along with staff and local politicians.
Confirmation that the school would be built came last November when the then Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan included Cahergal as a priority project on the government’s School Building Programme.
Speaking at this week’s ceremony, Sally Flynn said it had been a long journey since 1998 when the first application was lodged for a new school, but that the timing was now right to deliver the new school facility.
