Weather kept crowds from Athenry battle anniversary

IF Sunday afternoon’s downpour had occurred 700 years ago, the Battle of Athenry would have been called off.
So said one of the brave who ventured out into the elements to see the exhibits assembled to mark the grim event at Walled Towns Day on Sunday.
This crucial battle between the Irish and the Anglo-Normans culminated in a devastating defeat for the King of Connacht Felim O’Connor and the local chieftain Taidgh O’Kelly and both were  killed on the day. The outcome of the battle would secure Anglo-Norman dominance for over 200 years.
