Fleeing shoppers cost athenry millions of euro

MILLIONS of euro is being lost to Athenry as a result of people shopping in Galway and Oranmore.
Local councillors say the town centre has been devastated and there are only two places where you can buy a pint of milk.
A meeting of Galway County Council on Monday was told that 24 businesses in the town have closed in recent years while only three have opened.
Something needs to be done to revitalise the town centre and efforts to secure planning permission for a new discount supermarket were put forward as a possible lifeline for the town.
