Galway funds will help keep knock in the air

A TOTAL of €1.5 million from Galway County Council’s coffers will help keep Ireland West Airport Knock on track.
The Council has agreed to buy a shared stake in the Mayo airport but some councillors see the move as a “bail out” and feel that the new motorway will divert more Galway passengers to Shannon.
The request for financial support first came last July. The plan will see seven local authorities (Galway City and County Councils, Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Mayo) collectively invest €7.3 million (a 30-year loan) for a 17.5 per cent share in the airport.
Galway County Council’s share of the loan amounts to 12.5 per cent and €50,000 will be paid each year.
