Polltopping belclare councillor headhunted for new political alliance

BELCLARE’S Sean Canney is keeping his options open following the weekend invitation from Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice to start a new political party.
This week Independent Cllr Canney, who topped the poll in the Tuam Municipal District in May’s local elections, said he will decide next month what he is going to do regarding the next general election.
“I have been talking to Michael Fitzmaurice and he said on the night of the Christmas party for my supporters and election workers that he will be encouraging me to run for the Dáil.
“I am looking at all the options and consulting with family and supporters and will decide in January,” says Cllr Canney, who ran for the Dáil in the last general election in 2011.
The new TD from Glinsk, who has risen rapidly to prominence since he took his seat in the Dail in November, says he admires Cllr Canney and will talk to him about joining his alliance.
