May Gibsey with her Christmas lights

May lights up tuam every christmas

FOR thousands of people travelling on the N17 during the Christmas season the glow of countless colourful lights, reindeer, Santas and a Christmas Crib with figures of the Nativity scene in a front garden at Galway Road, Tuam, lights up the way.
People from near and far have been commenting on the colourful Christmas scene which completely encompasses all the extensive garden space around May Gibsey’s neat bungalow.
“I started out by putting one set of lights out on a tree in the garden about ten years ago and over the years I have built up the collection to such an extent that I had to get a shed built specially to store all the lights,” says May, who adds to the collection every year at the January sales.
May doesn’t mind spending money on the display as “I love the lights and I simply love Christmas.
“Last year I spent about €500 in electricity to power the display but as I don’t smoke or bother with drink either, this is my hobby. It gives me a lift to see the lights switched on each evening and I hope it gives a lift to the passers-by and to the town too,” she says.
