Call to donate to bury the dead

GRAVEYARDS in Co Galway are so short of space that councillors have asked landowners to donate land for burial grounds.
The council is short of money to buy land, and the critical lack of burial space throughout the county can best be addressed by donations of land from the public.
This is according to members of Galway County Council who have backed a motion to advertise for offers of suitable sites. The matter was raised this week when members approved an extension to Ballygar Burial Ground.
Claregalway councillor Malachy Noone said the only way to solve the crisis was for the council to take the lead.
“I propose that the council put it out to the public and advertise for offers of land for cemeteries, either at agricultural land prices, or if landowners are willing, to donate land free of charge,” he said.
