Anniversary of road tragedy marked by phase three of safety plan

AS the fifth anniversary approaches of the deaths of four students and the serious injury of another at a notorious bend at Carrownurlaur on the N17, further works to make safe the road between Milltown and Ballindine have been sanctioned by Galway Co Council.

At the October meeting, the tragic accident, which prompted the NRA, the local authority and local residents to take action, was recalled and several members expressed the view that it was fitting to remember the young women at this time.

The location where the collision occurred has since been realigned, as has another section of this difficult-to-negotiate road. The project given the go-ahead by the Council is the third phase of the realignment works and will begin within 100 metres of the accident spot and proceed towards Ballindine for 2.5km.
