Tougher laws needed to combat sulky racing on county roads

GARDAI around Co Galway have little power to curb the problem of dangerous sulky racing in residential estates and on public roads.
Residents in some estates in Ballinasloe are tormented by illegal horse and trap racing around the narrow estate roads while only last week such activity was reported on the busy commuter N63 road near Turloughmore.
Moylough County Councillor Michael Connolly is spearheading a campaign to lobby the Minister for Transport to intervene and put proper legislation in place to allow Gardai to clamp down on the races.
However, there have also been suggestions by a county councillor that sulky racing could be developed into a thriving spectator sport and become as popular as greyhound racing.
