Concern for rail in west as 31 more stations threatened with closure

RAIL campaigners in the West are bracing themselves for what some see as an escalation of the anti-rail propaganda campaign, following reports in the national media that another 31 small rural stations are being targeted for closure.
Those involved with the West on Track campaign, which campaigns for a Western Rail Corridor that would include opening up the rail line between Claremorris and Athenry, linking Tuam to the network once again, are concerned that the focus of officialdom and the Department of Transport is dominated by road projects – and rail is not being given adequate consideration.
One of the 31 stations on the latest list is Attymon, with claims that only two passengers per day use the facility on the Galway-Dublin line. There is a fear in the West that such stations are being used to downplay the argument for rail in the region.
