Want to cut property tax bill? Move to the city

IF you want to slash your property tax bill then move to the city. Property prices may be higher but the Department of the Environment has stated that City Hall will be able to cut householders’ property tax bill by 15 per cent. However, those governed by County Hall in the rest of Galway will have to pay the full whack.
Galway City Council can cut their bills because the authority has a surplus of cash but Galway Co Council is not so lucky and will need the full amount of tax collected if they are going to maintain their current level of services.
The issue is a controversial one and sparked the first heated debate when the newly elected Co Council met in June. Calls for sanctioning a 15 per cent cut were kicked to touch by officials who persuaded members to postpone voting on the matter until September so all councillors could be made fully aware of the impact such a cut would have on services.
