Connachts vision sees rugby rise up among the masses

ONCE the preserve of the middle classes, and a world away from the heartland of the county where parish clubs have cultivated generations of GAA fans down through the years, rugby is commanding a growing presence on Galway’s sporting scene.
Connacht Rugby in particular has attracted increased interest over the past four or five years, as its burgeoning fan base fills the Sportsground, creating an intimate and unique atmosphere where players and fans alike front up and rise up.
Regular televised matches on both TG4 and Sky ensure armchair supporters can share in the success from the comfort of their living rooms. And yet the frequency of adrenalin-filled encounters, which end in victory for the home side, are enticing more and more people out on cold crisp winter nights to savour the sweet smell of victory, pitch side.
While once considered the poor relation of Irish rugby, Connacht is being now being afforded serious financial recognition from the IRFU, who have invested heavily in facilities and player development at the club.
