Happy heart message for galway women

LOCAL heart specialist Dr Yvonne Smyth will give a free public talk in the Croí Heart and Stroke Centre in Galway on Thursday, October 1 at 7.30 pm specifically aimed at women in the county.
The talk is aimed at raising awareness among women that heart disease is not just a man’s disease.
Croí’s lead prevention nurse specialist Irene Gibson says, “This may be something of a wake-up call for women of all ages. There is huge awareness and fear of breast cancer among women, but it may come as a surprise to many that women are seven times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than breast cancer. In fact, one in every two women will die from heart disease or stroke.” On a positive note, however, Irene says that the good news is that up to 90 per cent of heart disease and stroke is preventable through lifestyle change and risk-factor management.
Galway women of all ages are invited to attend this free event where they will learn about the warning signs and symptoms of heart disease and how these can sometimes be very different from those experienced by men.
Places are limited, so pre-booking is essential. To book a place phone 091-544310 or visit www.croí.ie
