Belclare shocked by sudden deaths

THE community in Belclare and Sylane was shocked by the sudden deaths of two popular local men during the past week. The body of 79-year-old Laurie Newell from Sylane was discovered on a turf bank on Wednesday morning after an extensive search. He was reported missing the previous night after going for a walk and it is understood that he was checking his turf at the time of his sudden death. Laurie was well known in sporting circles as he was a star of the 1959 county title-winning Corofin junior football team and he was also a founder of Sylane hurling club.[private] Large crowds attended the removal of his remains, Mass and burial on Friday and Saturday. He is survived by his wife Nina and son Willie, his sister-in-law Mary, niece Colette, nephew Eamon and extended family. He was laid to rest in Killower Cemetry on Saturday. Meanwhile on Sunday morning Jarlath Treacy who was in his mid-50s died suddenly after walking at Knockma Hill. Jarlath is a member of a popular Claretuam family and he is survived by his wife Phil, daughter Susan, son Jarlath Junior, brothers, sisters and extended family.[/private]
