Landmark day as first ‘bog-swap’ turf arrives in Ballinlass
By TONY GALVIN
THE delivery of the first lorry load of replacement turf under what is known as the bog-swap scheme, was made at Ballinlass on Friday. It is being described as a landmark event in the on-going stand-off between some turf cutters on protected bogs and the Government.
Turf cutters in the Mountbellew-Newbridge area agreed to move from their traditional bogs, which are now designated Special Areas of Conservation (SPC), and relocate to Bord na Mona turf banks in Killosolan.
